New Brief (Time Based Media Assignment)

After finishing the book cover assignment we were then given our next assignment with the brief stating what was required for the project. The next assignment is called 'Time Based Media' so when i first heard of this assignment i instantly thought of video editing or filming, and i was right.

When i continued to read the assignment it stated that we would be editing and creating a 15-20 second film sequence which has 30 edits. This film sequence should involve a type of journey within the narrative of the sequence, and it can have be dark, creepy, humorous or any type of theme within the video. It states that the sequence can be based on an everyday event and can create our own sound effects for emphasis on the events within the video sequence we create. We also have the option to have a 3 second intro and outdo to the film sequence but will be added on the 15-20 seconds of our final video.

So picking things out from the brief these are the main key aspects and important parts of the brief.

-15-20 Second film sequence
- 30 edits (minimun)
- (Optional Intro/Outro) - Added to additional sequence length
- Sequence can be based on a simple everyday event
- Should involve somewhat of a journey
- Can have any type of feeling to the sequence (e.g. Humorous / Scary etc)
- Use Sound to exaggerate events

So let's discuss more about the individual aspects which are apart of the brief.

15-20 second film sequence

With this part overall we have to create a film sequence that we'll have filmed and then need to edit the video so its between 15 to 20 seconds long which has the main narrative within it and is edited well so it flows well and links together with each shot, making some sense to what is going on.

This might be challenging to create a 15-20 second film sequence  as it seems very short which presents an everyday event and gives a journey like feel within this time limit. However I'm up for the challenge and have edited in the past some short sequences which had a limit to the length, so i will work as hard as i can to create a great film sequence which works well within the shots, linking together really well and flowing in a appropriate pace, which is interesting and engaging.

30 edits (minium)

This is another important part of the film sequence and that is for the video to have AT LEAST 30 edits within the 15-20 second film sequence that we create. Edits basically mean cuts between each shots, so ideally its saying that we need at least 30 shots within this length of the sequence. This may seem a lot and when i red it i realised we would need to do roughly to 2 edits within 1 second if we were to 15 seconds of a film sequence and trying to aim for 30 edits. It does seem daunting, however in a lot of ads, video, film there are a lot of strong edits and have increased as time has gone by, as its used to create a fast snappy feel to interest and engage you into that particular media, instead of using a couple of edits and boring whoever is watching that media.

These 30 edits are pretty much number of shots or cuts, and it will mean we'll have to be adventurous within shooting our work and using different shot types and camera movement  to create a certain feeling within that sequence and to keep it interesting as well.

Overall i understand why 30 edits would be appropriate in this time limit within the length of the sequence that we create and will defiantly be do able, so I'm looking forward to it.

(Optional Intro/Outro)

This is one of the optional parts of the creation of the film sequence, which is to create a 3 second intro and or outro within our video. This is a good idea as it would help establish what the film sequence is about and who might've taken part in helping the creation of the filming within the sequence etc. So i can understand it might be a good idea to use either one or both, however its optional and within film there is a term used a lot which is called 'enigma' and this term is applied in a lot of film which means the audience questioning in their mind what is going on and giving a sense of confusion, or questioning which is used a lot in film and is a great way to create an atmosphere, so not using a intro might create enigma to what is going on within the film sequence which might be a good thing if that's what you want within the sequence, so either way using a intro or not can be effective in many ways, and can change how you see or how you react to what you are watching. Everything matters within video, the way you edit or interoperate certain shots, lighting etc will make you think differently to watching it, and can change how you portray it and change the mood or feeling within the sequence.

Sequence can be based on a simple everyday event

One of the main parts of the film sequence is the narrative, and because the sequence can only be between 15 to 20 seconds it means we can't create a big story, so it means it has to be much more of a simplistic narrative. The brief suggests the events can be based off any everyday event, so we have a lot of options to what we could do for our sequence, its going to take some time to decide what i want to do for my events within this sequence and who I'm going to use to help me film and what setting etc I'm going to film in, so there's a lot to consider and i will brainstorm my ideas very soon, so i can get my mind flowing and get some good ideas out, because at the moment i don't really have a clue what i will do for mine yet, but am questioning and considering what i might do but, brainstorming will help immensely and around that time i will be more confident about certain ideas and have more of a better picture of how it might look and what i want to go for and what type of feeling etc i would wanna go for.

Should involve somewhat of a journey

With this idea we can create a type of journey within our short narrative event, this means, a beginning, a middle and a end, or conclusion within sequence so it flows from these points so there is a bit more form within the sequence and its obvious its placed together correlate and doesn't look messy or out of place. A beginning, a middle and end is very important as it helps to form and structure the video, and you see it a lot in ads, film and all different types of media and its used to make it look more professional, and structured which is important when it comes to video as it has to make sense otherwise it will be a messy pile of confusion and nonsense which isn't what you'd want.

So its important to have this aspect within the film sequence as it helps to give more structure, and form to the video and all look more well placed and interesting towards the viewers and that's a vital part of video, getting your message across in an interesting way and using a beginning, middle and end will help you be able to achieve this, so its something i will take into consideration and will apply within my ideas and final sequence that i create.

Can have any type of feeling to the sequence (e.g. Humorous / Scary etc)

Within film or any type of media there is always a type of atmosphere or feeling or genre within it, to give it more of an overall label to what type of film or media it will be like. Giving a genre or feeling can create more of a narrative or a can change the way we view the media and see it in a different light or the way it was made to be seen, it helps to set the scene and gives the content of the media an atmosphere so we perceive it the way it way made be be perceived.

Because i haven't decided the type of events or narrative i want to go for i can't tell what the genre/feeling will be like for my film sequence. When get to brainstorm ideas i will come to this topic and will consider what feeling i will go for and how i could apply it within the shots, or lighting, or the camera movement, or setting.

 Use Sound to exaggerate events

Sound is an important element within any type of media and is probably more important that video to be honest. For example if you are watching a scary film and its edited quickly to create a dramatic and hastful atmosphere, if you you use happy music it wouldn't scare or make you feel scared n any sense so sound is a very, very important element within video editing, and media.

In this project we can't use copyright material when it comes to sound, so no music or stolen sound effects online, it all needs to be created ourselves, so if we want to use sound we could use the sound from video we film, or we could create our own sound effects or go to sound libraries to get sound effects from. This could help exaggerate the atmosphere and could lead to it being slightly comical or funny if that's what you want to go for i.e. humorous feeling to the sequence. Sound is important and because it is i will definaltey consider what i will do for this specific part of the idea of the film sequence.

Overall we have a lot of elements within this project that are important and we need to consider, and i will consider when i officially start brainstorming my ideas in my sketchbook.

The final outcomes of our project are the following:

-Produce a number of storyboards that visually illustrate their chosen narratives.

-Produce documented evidence of supporting research and idea generation in sketchbook/project folder format

-Produce time based works that demonstrate an understanding of prescribed areas.

-We also need a register outlining where the assets are from

Storyboards

This is something we NEED which is story boards of our final sequence, which will need to be detailed with the sketched shots and detailed description of that specific shot, and need to do this for our final idea and do it for all of the individual shots we use within our time based media film sequence, so its very important and could be first done by hand with one shot per page and then scanned in with detailed information underneath about the shot, the type of shot and the scene and what is going on within the shot.

Sketchbook work

Sketchbook work is another MUST which has documented evidence of supporting evidence of our work as well as idea development and progress etc which outline our journey from brainstorming to having our finished idea.

Time Based Media Sequence

This is the final piece of the 15-20 second film sequence which contains 30 edits or more, and is the overall video after its all been filmed, edited and cut down to fit the criteria for the length of the sequence and how many edits should be in it.

Register

The register is to outline what assets we may have used to create the film sequence, so this would be if we used stills, intro related content, typography, sound effects etc that we used to prove specifically what we used within the creation and final piece of our work and that nothing is copyrighted or taken without permission.

Overall  after looking at the brief in detail and taking everything into consideration i'm looking forward to the challenge and will try my best to do as much research and keep up with blog work, sketchbook work and developing my idea as i can and i look forward to how my final piece will look like.
