Matilda Analysing (Trunchball Intruder chase scene) - Discussing Mise-en-Scene/Cinematography

After looking at the City of God chicken chase scene i decided to look at an older film which is a classic but has a few scenes in the film that use editing in order to create an atmosphere to that scene with the use of different techniques.

The sequence i wanted to analyse is from an old classic made 1996 called 'Matilda' and was made based off the book written by Roald Dahl. The genre of the film is a type of family comedy which is about a young, intelligent girl who is excluded from her family. This changes once she goes to school and meets many people who are kind and friendly towards her, like Ms Honey for example. However Matilda soon begins to get involved with the Headmistress of the school named Ms Trunchball.

Time in Film: Start: 58 Min 38 Seconds -  End: 1 Hour 1 Minute 29 Seconds

The scene i chose to analyse is the scene where both Ms Honey and Matilda go into Ms Trunchball's house while she's away, and the reasoning is to get Ms Honey's old doll that she had when she was a little girl. However everything goes wrong when Ms Trunchball comes home eariler than expected and sense's something out of place and then tries to hunt what she thinks to be intruders as she sees her chocolate box lid removed from the box, conveying someones been eating the chocolate out of the box.

(Beginning part of scene, Isn't the only part of shots there are more below i go into detail)

This scene I’m analysing has a lack of equilibrium, because of the dramatic and unstable situation the characters are in at this point of the film. In this particular scene in the film is a great way to look at the use of some micro elements, like cinematography and mise-en scene.

Let's start with mise-en-scene, this micro element is  based mainly around the setting, props, costumes, figure expression, and staging etc. However this micro element has a huge purpose towards the creating of a film, because it can help establish towards the audience what type of film it is, based on the setting or costumes etc.

The setting of the scene at the point of the film is obviously set in Ms Trunchball’s mansion. The first impressions of her home from the audience would be a massive, and mind blowing place, that is very elegant and tidy. This is ironic since Ms Trunchball would be referred as a strong, masculine woman, rather than an elegant woman. An example of this would be when she heaves her car back to her home, which would symbolise how strong she really is. However later in the scene the audience sees parts of the mansion that fits her personality, with the use of props, i.e. the steel balls, the dark basement with chains etc. Another element of Mise-en-scene is the use of costumes. The costumes used in a film can have significance towards the characters, and how the audience might first perceive them alongside with their actions.

In the scene we see three different characters and the clothing they wear. Matilda’s outfit is a pretty dress with a cardigan and red ribbon. The audience would first perceive Matilda’s outfit as sweet, and innocent. Because young children have that element of innocence attached to them, and having a young girl with clothing such as this, adds to being young and innocent.

In relation Ms Honey wears a dress with a cardigan as well, but because of her age the audience might first perceive her differently than Matilda. For example the audience might get the idea that she is a very simple and fairly basic woman. This choice of clothing might be used to give the idea that she isn’t of much importance within this scene, to help focus the audience more on Ms Trunchball and Matilda. On the other hand Ms Trunchball wears very masculine clothing, i.e. sporty clothes. The audience would get the idea she’s strong, and works out a lot, and by her facial expressions, and actions within this scene we would also perceive her as an intimidating and somewhat frightening figure.

Cinematography is another micro element that is revolved around the camera work within film making. For example different angles and shot types, composition, lighting and special effects. In this scene the camera movement within the shots are very fast paced, because of Ms Trunchball trying to hunt down the intruders in her home. This is used try and gain a suspenseful and heart racing atmosphere towards the audience. However there are switches between fast and slow paced parts of this scene, as well as having Point of view shots from one characters perspective to another. To help the audience relate to the emotions of the characters, and the situation they’re in.

In this scene the audience is put in three characters perspectives throughout. Matilda, Ms Trunchball, and Ms Honey. But mainly through the perspectives of Matilda and Ms Trunchball. The reason why the film makers focus on these two characters in particular is because of how different they are in comparison to each other. For example Matilda being a young, small, innocent child. Whereas Ms Trunchball being a huge, and older woman who is very strict and intimidating. This helps create a more frightening atmosphere towards the chase scene for the audience.

Another way at looking at the scenes situation is that Trunchball is the predator, hunting down Matilda the prey. So there’s this idea of symbolism between hunting and being hunted like animals. This is shown within the first couple of shots where the angles types are either low or high to convey the dominance Ms Trunchball has over the insecurity of Matilda and Ms Honey. Also in Shot 4, the angle is at a slight high angle, where both Matilda and Ms Honey are hiding behind the staircase. The use of the high angle also conveys insecurity, and the use of the staircase bars gives the impression that they are trapped and there’s no way out.

In Shot 24 the type is a mid shot of Ms Trunchball, but with a close up of Matilda at the side of the screen, alongside with an eye level shot. This is used to create a suspenseful atmosphere, which increases by Ms Trunchball slowly approaching Matilda. The composition of this shot is divided, where Matilda is on the left side of the screen and Trunchball on the right, and the door in-between both of them. This helps signify the division not only between them both and the door, but the types of characters they are. So the door symbolises a division between innocence and evil within this film. This shot also helps create a tension, where it slowly builds up to make the next part even more suspenseful and somewhat frightening.

The next couple of shots from shot 31 to shot 35 are at canted angles where Ms Honey gains Ms Trunchball’s attention, by throwing the prop of the steel ball against the wall and then Trunchball rushing across hallway. This angle type might be used to create disorienting feel towards the scene, in order to make the audience perceive the situation the same as the victims i.e. like a nightmare. Also there is a use of a lot of Point of view shots from one perspective to another, in order to gain the characters reactions and the emotions they feel at specific points of this scene towards the audience.

In shot 36 the shot type is at a mid close up where Matilda tries to escape the mansion from the back stairs leading into the kitchen, but accidentally makes the pans tumble on her way out which re gains Trunchball’s attention. This leads Ms Trunchball quickly taking action by jumping down the banister, where the angle of this shot is at a worms eye view in order to create an intimidating figure of Ms Trunchball jumping down. As she lands there is a use of an earthquake effect to symbolise how strong and powerful this character truly is, and to horrify not only the characters but the audience as well.

The fast pacing of the camera movement continues where Ms Trunchball sprints towards the kitchen to capture her intruder. The use of quick shots as well as having a zoom in shot 63 builds a fast and intense atmosphere towards the audience. Once Ms Trunchball enters the kitchen the pacing halts, which is shown by the fact that there’s not much sound and having a slow tracking shot. However the tension slowly creeps in as soon as Ms Trunchball notices the table in the kitchen, where the shot begins to zoom into a close up of her face, which is at a low angle to convey her dominance and her power, thinking she will capture the intruder.

In these final shots of this sequence the audience can see the shadow of Ms Trunchball slowly approaching the table, and getting closer to lifting the table cloth. This adds to the suspense and tension that is slowly rising towards not only the characters, but the audience as well.  Then the use of the close ups and extreme close up of Matilda and the shadow of Ms Trunchball slowly coming closer, is used to show how frightened Matilda is through her facial expression, to gain the audiences empathy toward her.

Once Ms Trunchball fully lifts the table cloth to find no one there, the tension begins to calm down. Then having the use of a tilt underneath the table to witness Matilda clinging underneath the top of the table is used to relax the audiences mind, and to add a sense of humour towards her way of not being spotted.

Overall, despite the film being a family comedy, this sequence from the film has some very fast paced, frightening and horrific moments, along with some great micro elements that make this scene so suspenseful. On a whole this sequence uses a wide range of Mise-en-scene and Cinematography throughout, in order to produce a heart racing scene where the audience are put in position of the characters and how they feel.

City of God Chick Chase Scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASPvpdaQpRQ

After looking at segments from the large video of Go Pro i decided to start looking at film sequences that have very fast paced shots, and one film i recall having some very fast paced edited shots was a film called City of God which was directed by Meirelles and was made in 2002 and was a great film but very gory and disturbing and points of the film, but the editing was very well done.

When i first saw this film it was 2 years ago whilst i was studying Film Studies for my 2nd year of A level. This was one of the films we had to watch and was from a topic for the module of Urban stories which revolves around Power, Poverty and Conflict. In the exam i chose this along with a film called La Haine to write an essay about relating to the question and compare and contrasts through the use of cinematographic and mise-en-scene techniques, along with quotes which were powerful and memorable and relevant to the story along with comparing the type of narrative etc was in these two films.  In the end for the exam with the modules together i ended up getting an A in my exam which i was really proud of and now after taking Film Studies its helped me to look at film in a different way by the way its edited, narrative and techniques used to enhance the audiences experience. This this post i will be analysing certain shots and techniques and inner meaning of some of them and giving an overall summary of what is actually happening etc in this sequence.

To start with in the opening shots we can tell there are a huge range of close up shots, along with POV shots of the chicken, and because some of them are low angles it makes the surroundings look a lot more intimidating and the people around the area. This helps to give the sense of being trapped and there being no escape. The POV shot from the chicken help to give us a insight to the feeling of the area and what it feels like, and almost that we're trapped, making us feel bad for the chicken.

The use of the fast shots give the sense of danger and a lot happening in this environment, as if its always busy and a lot happening. Because we only really see close ups and this is the first scene in the film we can't tell where we are placed or what environment, but gives this idea that its placed within a claustrophobic setting as there a lot of people and a lot of movement, which also helps to re emphasise the sense of being trapped and unable to escape.

The use of the first shots of the knife in different angles help to already give the feeling of danger as we'd usually associate a knife we violence and gangs, so going into this scene with the first couple of shots being closeups of knives slicing gives an uneasy feeling to the atmosphere as well as a sense of danger.

With the chase scene itself, it is very fast paced and uses contrasting shots with the people of Brazil in the slum chasing the chicken and tracking shots of the chicken running away, this makes the scene more interesting and feeling of a chase scene. The use of the type of camera which is handheld makes the film feel less informal and more real as if its really happening.

The film itself is directed by Meirelles and is set in Brazil in Rio the slum which is a really bad, gritty lower class area where popular crime happens, along with drugs etc so by this we can tell its a very unsafe environment in Brazil. This film was also filmed using real people from the slums, so this makes the film feel more feel and the setting is in a real place of Rio in the real slums, so it altogether gives almost a documentary type of film feel to it with the real setting and the handheld camera. All of these aspects emphasise the realism of how bad the slums are and what its like to live in the area with all the crime and drugs going on.

Ending Sequence (4:08-4:34)

After looking at a couple of sequences from the GO Pro video and analysing the shot types, along with the meaning and movement from the camera etc. along with the analysing the intro i decided to take it up on myself to analyse the ending of the video as its very interesting use of shots and creates a great ending with some good cinematography techniques.

Shot 1:

This is the first shot within the ending sequence, and is when the music begins to get very hasty and rapid, to build up an atmosphere and concluding a great ending with a large impacting ending.

In this shot itself is a birds eye view shot and has the person making an angel in the snow, and as they do this the camera slowly zooms out. One thing about this shot is its has the same skier we saw in a earlier part of the video, so the ending sequence is building up the ending by wrapping up everything we've seen from cold to hot environments, and starts with the cold environment and of the skier we saw earlier.

This way as its ending gives off the feeling that these people are at the end of the adventure or journey, as they are playfully playing in the snow relaxing and having fun. Also something to note is the person's color of the jacket and the fact they are in the middle of the screen makes them eye catching and the main focal point of the shot.

Shot 2:

This  next shot is from the woman who was rock climbing in an earlier part of the video, and is contrasting to the previous shot where it was set in a cold setting and now this one is in a very bricky, rock, hot environment which is a huge contrast from a snow environment. The shot is a large wide, long shot which is done to portray the amazing view and beauty of this environment, and the high angle helps to emphasise this as well as the largeness of the area with the rocks etc.

The shot pans more to the left in a circular motion making the woman with her hand out one of the main focal points. This helps to create a powerful atmosphere and a sense of accomplishment as she has gotten to the top of the cliff after rock climbing all the way up there.

Shot 3:

This shot is of a man and a female lion running towards the camera, and i would assume that the environment is set in Africa, with the sun slowly setting. The setting is very clam and a very relaxing environment with open fields and trees in the distance and along with clouds in the sky and the sun setting, which gives a relaxing and clam atmosphere to this shot.

The shot is a wide long shot of the environment and the man and female lion walking towards the camera, with the camera tracking out backwards, to make it obvious they are following the camera. This shot displays both human and animals with the lion and man in the shot, almost showing that animal and man can be friends and only when animals are hungry like lions will they attack, so this shot makes it obvious that the lion is harmless and has eaten, which gives a more calmer feeling towards the shot because usually you'd see in a place like this the lion ripping the man to shreds, but because the lion isn't focusing on the guy in the background we can tell the atmosphere is fine and not tense

Shot 4:

In this shot it has another skier about to take on the hills. We can tell its someone different as they have a different coloured jacket, so this makes it obvious that its someone different. And because of the shot which is a high angled birds eye view shot, we can tell that this person hasn't skied down the hill as we can see him on the top of the  hills and the drop of the snowy hill making it obvious this person hasn't yet. The use of this type of shot makes the hill look more intimidating, and scary as if this person is just about try to conker this activity or might be scared to take a risk. In contrast to the other skier who was in the snow relaxing after having skied down the hill.

Shot 5:

Within this shot is an ape relaxing in the shade of leaves and the ape gazing at the camera. This shot type is a mid shot of these apes from the leaves and is at a slight high angle which is done to give a type of POV shot as if we are kneeling down and moving the leaves to gaze at these beautiful creates, so we feel like we're the ones in the video and exploring nature in this shot, which makes the audience watching feel immersed within this amazing video.

The use of leaves and apes relaxing, emphasises not just the environment of a jungle but nature in general and makes the shot that much more love able with these cute lovely apes, and gazing into the camera which breaks the 4th wall and makes it seem like this ape is looking directly at us, as if we are the ones actually filming and using this camera and filming these amazing creatures.

Shot 6:

This shot is a mid shot of a boy holding the camera whilst riding something, and potentially losing his balance with the look on his face as he's trying to hold the camera. Also since we see a ship in the background and with him making that face along with the camera movement it gives the impression he jumped from the roof of the ship and is diving in to the sea which i why  this boy is making a face like this.

This shot also represents innocence with this child in the shot and gives the impression that anyone at any age can have a blast and have their own adventure, even at any age young or old.

Shot 7:

The 7th shot uses a high angle shot which is also a close up of a part of the lions face and the man in the background lying down beside the lion. With this shot again it makes it feel as if we are filming this shot as its a POV shot as well and has the addition of the lion gazing with its one eye at the camera as if we are filming and its looking at us, which is a great way to involve viewers in watching this video, as we feel apart of it and almost like we are filming all of this content and we own this type of camera.

It helps to give a good overview of how good this camera is as well with jaw droppingly amazing shots and sites from all sorts of environments and including POV shots help to immerse the viewers into this video and as if we are apart of all these journeys and wear filming it all which is a great way to promote this camera that the channel uses.

Shot 8:

This is the final shot above from the video and display's their channel name and uses their slogan which is 'Be a hero' and  also displays camera they use for filming their content on their channel. The typography is very modern and blocky and gives the sense of a futuristic look, which might suggest this is the future to filming with a camera like this. The colour of the text is white to stand out and contrast with the black background so its readable and legible. The use of the camera gives people the idea of what camera they use.

The slogan 'Be a Hero' is the type of camera they use to film which links in with the image of the camera they use and gives a sense of epicness with a slogan like this as if we could be a hero with a type of film camera like this and film fascinating sites and views and adventures like the ones they film.

Overall this whole video had a great amount of content, very great quality filming which was due to this amazing camera and the mise-en-scene choice of environments and it did the camera justice, proving this camera is so great with great depth and views from different environments which feel like millions of adventures collated into one video, which is why this video is so inspiring.

Go Pro Analysing (Part 2)

GoPro: HERO3+ Black Edition: Smaller, lighter, mightier still.

Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wbvpOIIBQA

After looking at the beginning of the video and analysing it i wanted to analyse certain parts of the rest of the video as i didn't want to do the whole thing since its quite long of a video and  would take ages to go into detail about everything, so I've picked out parts of the rest of the video that i like.

Surfing (0:47-0:56)

One of the clips from the video i chose was the surfing clip at 0:47, the reason why is because it just looked so epic the guy surfing underneath the wave as if it was like a tunnel, and kinda felt like a journey in its own with the guy trying his best to surf through the tide.

Shot 1

This is the 1st shot and displays the man surfing and going through the wave and surfing through it. This is quite amazing of a site to see and he doesn't get knocked off his surf board at any point. Its quite amazing and seeing him surf through the wave kind of gives a kind of journey feel from start to finish as he goes in and out of the wave safely without falling of his board.

The shot itself is is a mid shot of the man surfing from behind and the tide raising and slowly falling down, and the guy making his way through it. Its a great shot and creates a mind blowing, epic feel as he easily makes his way through the tide on his surfboard. The use of sunlight gives a much brighter and warmer feel to this scene and makes it that more epic.

Shot 2

This is the 2nd shot of the guy going through the tide on his surfboard, and surprisingly this clip only used 2 shots throughout. This shot however starts with the shot of the guys reaction and making it through the tide, and the pans around behind hi mt o see him make it out of the tide. This type of shot started with a slightly high angle and ended with a lowish angle.

Also something to note is that when the person makes it out he's more to the left that centered as its to convey the closeness of the tide caving in and anticipation, of the person and will they make it out.

Skiing (0:57-1:04)

The 2nd clip i decided the analyse the shots are the scene with the Skiing at 0:57, as it has a lot of dynamic and great movement throughout the clips and it was a pretty fast and dynamic part of the video which is why it stood out for me and caught me attention more than some of parts of the video.

Shot 1

In the first shot its start with a a low angled, level shot of the person's ski's and the person riding down the hills on his ski's. This shot makes it seem like a point of view shot and is quite close up so it makes it feel like we are the ones riding down the snowy hills which makes this part of the video feel more immersed for the audience.

This shot also makes it feel more faster as we are placed on the ski's and feel like we're on them going down this hill, which makes it feel more speedy and faster of a shot.

Shot 2

In the 2nd shot is of a high angle of the person who is skiing down the snowy mountain hill, which is down to give us another point of view of the skiing and what is actually going on. The shot does tilt slightly which might either be due the camera and the position its on or it should be deliberate so it gives a better view of the mountain and sky, to emphasise the beauty of its environment, making the combined clips feel more interesting and dynamic as well as impacting.

Shot 3

The 3rd shot is of the person rapidly fast skiing down the slope of the snowy mountain and is done is a very fast shot, which creates impact and more interest within this part of the video, as if its edited like a fast movie chase scene or something. The shot itself is a mid shot but pans to the left and at one point of the end of the clip would probably be considered a high angel shot as the person is below the camera as  they are going down the snowy hill. The movement is fast as well considering the person's speed is really fast as well.

We also get a glimpse of some of the mountains which re emphaisises the mise-en-scene of the beautiful environment its set in.

Shot 4

In shot 4 of this sequence we see a mid, low angled shot of the person skiing, but this time the camera is in front of the person, so we can see their reaction to a certain extent. Because the person is smiling we get the impression it must be a very fun and exciting experience and that their heart is probably racing really fast, as it seems like a fast activity and can get your adrenaline going.

The person is in the centre of this shot making them the main focal point and the use of yellow jacket they are wearing helps to make this very eye catching from this shot. The shot is tracking backwards as we see the person skiing in front of us to make the shot epic and also from the person filming makes it seem like we're the ones filming it to a certain extent and this helps to make us feel involved and we're apart of this mind blowlingly fun activity in this beautiful setting, which makes us more immersed i this shot.

This shot also tracks around the whole person from front to back, by doing a 180 degree turn with the camera creating a lot more dynamic in the shot as well as making the shot look a lot more complex and interesting to look at.

Rock Climbing (1:14-1:24)

The next clip i chose that interested me was the rock climbing sequence of the woman climbing these rocks, and making it to the top with an outstanding and mind blowing view. The reason i chose this sequence also is because of the setting, as its quite a contrast from the snow environment and its interesting with the type of shots that show the woman's progression up the rocks and then making it to the top, and i also like the colours from the shot which is from the type of environment is.

Shot 1

In 1st shot of this sequence is starts out with a woman trying to climb up between these two rocks, and because is in the middle between the two rocks it places her in the centre of the screen, making her the main focal point of this shot. The shot type is a mid shot and is placed at level position making it easy on the eye and gives the audience a viewpoint of her climbing between these two rocks and a nice look at the background of this type of environment, making the shot looking even more visually pleasing.

Shot 2

The next shot is of the woman's point of view of her rock climbing, the use of this POV shot again makes us feel involved and immersed into this world of rock climbing and as if we are actually climbing up these big cliff mountain. So we feel like we've been taken on to this adventure and makes it feel like we're trying to make it to the top, making the clip feel more personal. The use of the actual rock environment gives a very bright and warm feeling and because the shot uses a POV, its as if we can feel the heat just from the colour of the rocks as it seems to be set in a very hot environment, which I'd guess somewhere like Australia or somewhere similar.

Shot 3

This next shot is a mid shot of the woman stepping on these rocks one by one to make her way to the top so she can see the view from the top of the cliff from the rock climbing she's been doing. The shot is a low level but not a low angle as the shot sits up straight to look more professional and look more engaging using a shot like this for an action like stepping on rocks like the way she is. The movement from the camera is tracking and moving along slowly behind her, and because it does this it again gives the idea that we're her or along beside and sharing this adventure with her, which makes us feel more engaged and interested as well as immersed within this atmosphere and feel like we're taking part in this activity.

Shot 4

This 4th shot is another POV shot and is used at a low angle to emphaises the difficulty as well has the height and closeness of getting to the top of the cliff. This is also used to make us again feel involved, placing us in the woman's perspective, feeling immersed and like we are the ones climbing.

The use of the low angled, POV shot also helps to convey the power of the mountain and almost conveys that nature is power and strength and even though it is a natural and powerful part of the world we can overcome fears, and experience something we never usually experience. Also this might be to convey that life is an overall journey and sometimes their are rough points but at the end of the day if you get through it and beat and get past any hinderances you can feel on top of the world.

Shot 5

This next shot which is the 5th one in the sequence is the woman almost making it to the top of the cliff from the rocks she's been climbing. Now this shot is a mid shot with the woman almost making it to the top and is angled slightly at a low angle to make the woman seen strong and mighty after all the climbing she's been doing. This overall sequence just proves women can do anything a man can do, as rock climbing is a difficult task and not everyone can do it, maybe more so than woman and this proves stereotypes wrong and proves women can do a lot of of strong related endurance tasks that men could do.

The music throughout does build up and the type of music has an epic feel to it and this sequence links in well with the music, and the type of journey feel to the video along with the music.

Shot 6

The final shot in this sequence is a shot of the woman standing on top of the cliff from the rocks after having climbed them to see this view, and she is gazing at the amazing view. The sound after having been built up stops and slows down which is probably down to emphasise the amazing view of the mind blowingly gorgeous environment.  The shot type is a wide long, shot and is done to give a huge look at the amazing view and landscape of the setting, and looks outstanding and this camera with shots like these really prove the quality of the camera and what it can actually do. The shot also zooms out to give a better perspective of the view and the surroundings which adds to the amazing  sequence with an ending like this.

Go Pro Analysing (Part 1)

As I've looked into both advertisements on Television and looked at film trailers and discussed and analysed them i wanted to look at some less professional or videos which aren't made by professional companies, just to see how video can be explored through shots, mise-en-scene and the movement from the camera and how it can affect the overall appearance, good or worse. So i pretty much wanted to look for some videos, that are less professional when it comes to people making them and analyse them, and what better place to go than YouTube.

The other day last week our when our teacher Andrew was talking to use about this brief, he was talking about some good ways to look for video and analyse them, like from film scenes that he told us about and any film scenes that we like too, which I'll come to do shortly, but someone from our group suggested a YouTube channel called Go Pro, which i hadn't heard of so i decided to check out.

After looking at the channel and finding out more about their channel, they make a bunch of different types of filmed videos which are a couple on seconds to minutes long which involve things like surfing videos, skiing videos and videos which are set in all kinds of different environments and some of the video filming they do with their camera is outstanding, proving that just ordinary people can film video with anything and it can look good, as long as its been edited, good selection of engaging and mind blowing shots and the music fits with the atmosphere that's trying to be portrayed. So i will definitely take it on board when i come to film my short video, but it will be slightly more challenging because of the time limit and minimum amount of edits we have to do which is 30 edits within a 15-20 second time limit, but I'm up for the challenge.

Looking at Go Pro's channel, they have a website and i decided to look at what type of film camera they use for recording all these film clips and the camera they use is a  Hero 3+ camera and below is a selection of the different types they sell. The fact it says ''smaller, light, mightier still'' emphasises the quality of the camera, as it can film jaw dropping quality but also be a small camera for on the go purposes, which is almost an encouraging piece of equipment ad it seems it would be designed for people who like to film things in perfect quality. The cheapest edition of the three has wi-fi access, records in 1080p with 30 frames and has 5MP which seems very impressive for this small little camera.

Link to site: http://gopro.com/
Link to page: http://gopro.com/cameras

So after looking at the type of camera Go Pro use let's get stuck into one of their videos, and after browsing through a couple, one stuck out for me which was their video which played automatically when you'd go on their channel on their channel looked amazing and had a collage of great video, so i'll be firstly analysing this video which is:

GoPro: HERO3+ Black Edition: Smaller, lighter, mightier still.

Link to video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wbvpOIIBQA

Because there is a lot of content in this video, let's pick it apart and separate them into individual analysing segments so it makes it easier to talk about specific shots or parts of the video  rather than the video on a whole as it has a lot of content and will look more confusing and tiring and this way separating them will make it more organised and understandable when i want to discuss and specific part of the video.

Also something to note, i will NOT be talking about everything part of the video, i'll talk about some parts of the video i really liked and talk about the reasons about why the parts of the video stood out for me as well as analysing those parts of video through different techniques.

Introduction to video:

Shot 1: 0:04-0:12

Within this first shot it starts within a cold environment and uses a wide long shot of them along with the camera movement of tracking which moves forward. This helps to give a sense of environment with this type of shot and makes it jaw dropping with the amazing beauty of the environment, the use of tracking gives a sense of unveiling adventure and of the environment its set it.

The way its looks through appearance makes this look like its been filmed by a film company or something , and it almost makes it hard to believe such a small camera can capture such perfect quality and convey the beauty of this environment.

Shot 2: 0:13-0:16

The second shot is of people hiking up the mountain in this cold area, and shows this by using a wide long shot to help emphasise the environment they are in, giving the shot more of an admirable shot with the mountains and sky in the background. The camera movement in this shot is a pan from right to left and gives a sense of progression and adventure with the people hiking up the mountain as the shot pans.

Shot 3: 0:17-0:22

The 3rd shot of the introduction of the video is from a slightly high angel of a couple of people cycling at the side of the staircase at the side of the shot. This shot is more to do with the view, along with a lot of these shots, which is why the cyclists are at the side of the shot mostly likely, and so the view would be the main focal point and this shot type helps to do this very well.

There is a tracking shot along this shot and helps to give more of a view of the high angled view of the environment and beautiful view, and the sunset and the side of the shot helps to bring light into the shot and more of a warm feeling to the shot.

Shot 4: 0:22-0:25

This shot is in a different environment and is set in a mountain, rock atmosphere which is conveyed by the colour of the environment as well as the rock climber. The shot pans from left to right and unveils the rock climber and gives a sense of adventure with the rock climber and adds depth to the shot with just the background and then panning to a rock climber close up in the shot. This shot is another wide long shot and is shot to present the outstanding environment as well as the rock climber. The colour from the environment gives a warm feeling to the shot would probably make us think of the grand canyon or Australia as its a very hot place and looks like Australia.

Shot 5: 0:26-0:39

This shot above is slightly different from the ones we've seen so far in this video and its firstly a mid shot of someone putting on their gloves, to get ready to ride their motorcycle, and also the background is cloudy. In the previous shots we've seen great beauty from the wide shots of the environment, despite this in this shot when we can see the background we see clouds and a bland background, which might have been done to create more focus on the man's hands and putting on his gloves to ride his bike.

The shot doesn't give away the mans face, which gives a sense of mystery but is mostly doesn't to make the gloves the main focus, as if its preparing us for him to ride his motorbike, as the shot slowly pans to the left unveiling his ride.

Shot 6: 0:30-0:34

Within the 6th shot of the video it starts off with a low angled shot of the mans motor bike, starting up and him riding it, using a tracking shot as well,  and then the camera tilts upwards behind the man riding his bike as he gets further away from the camera, and ends up still being a slightly low angled shot along with turning into a mid long shot.

This type of movement in this shot creates dynamic to the video and maintains the interest with the shot feeling more speedy and faster paced with the motorbike riding away, and creates a feeling to this shot as if the person riding his bike is on a journey of some kind.

Shot 7: 0:34-0:36

After the previous shot the clips become more paced, as if the riding away motorcycle started the pace and began to build it up. This shot above is only 2 seconds long and is of some African children holding and looking at the camera. This gives a sense of innocence along with travel, as we see different environments and places. This shot is at a lightly low angle of the child holding the camera and is a mid close up shot of the children. This breaks the 4th wall as it has people looking directly at the camera, and makes the video more informal to a degree but also explore's different environments and types of people also, making the world more of one amazing thing.

Shot 8: 0:36-0:38

This is a mid shot of a man with a snowboard, looking like he's soon going to snowboard down the hill, also he is holding the camera. The shot pans slightly more around him, we can tell from the colour of the background of the environment and  their clothing that they are in a cold environment and that they are going to snowboard down the hill judging by their use of the snowboard they are holding.

Shot 9: 0:38- 0:40

This next shot is someone walking in a forest and is done by using a tracking shot, and the person shown on camera is in the left to centre of the shot making them the focal point and the shot also looks like a  POV shot of the person filming which makes it feel like we're there following her and filming.

Shot 10: 0:40-0:42

This shot judging by the colour is set underwater with someone in the centre of the shot, looking directly ahead, which also breaks the 4th wall and almost makes it feel like at times we are there because of this. The shot is at slightly high angle of the man scuba diving and is a mid shot as well with the camera tracking from in front of the person scuba diving. It also adds another type of activity from this video, almost like all these clips are a journey of some kind in themselves and this video compiles all of it together and showing what type of activities are adventurous and show of the camera in an amazing light.

Shot 11: 0:43-0:45

This shot is a little boy holding a surfing board, looking happy, from this we can tell the child is looking forward to something, and since he's holding the surfing board we can imagine he's excited because he's going to go surfing. Because some of the shots show people it makes it convey that anyone can have fun doing all sorts of different activities young, or older, and its never too late and this video compiles all of this together making this video a large mini amount of different adventures and beauty within different environments.

The shot itself is a mid shot of the boy, and is also tracking backwards as the child is walking forward in front of the camera, this also emphasises the whole idea he's excited to go somewhere (surfing). Judging by the environment its around the seaside and is in a tropical environment, with the palm trees in the background.

Shot 12: 0:45-0:47

This is the final shot within this type of introduction to the video and from this point has a lot of more scattered adventures and up to this point it has built up to this point for those scenes.

In this shot it is a mid closeup shot from behind a bird, and this shot is perfectly centered in them middle, with the head blocking the sun which I'd guess was purposely done to create a slightly more central feel.

This shot is slightly odd, but very effective and works well with the environment and of the bird in front of the camera, and the bird even moves its head in timing up the music which makes this shot more interesting.

So these are the shots from the introduction of the video, and looking at these shots they all work really well for different reasons, and give some stunning, mind blowing visuals, and it just proves that this camera that they use is amazing and the different environments, wide angled shots of mountains etc help to enhance this fact.
